Atlantic hurricane season is here, and just like that, a non-tropical area of low pressure is forecast to form offshore of the southeastern U.S. during the next couple of days. This low has the potential to develop some subtropical or tropical characteristics later this week. But what are those?<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 072620-1748957188663.png">As we look ahead, the Climate Prediction Center is highlighting a region (below) with low confidence in the formation of a tropical system in the western Caribbean or southwestern Gulf, also known as the Bay of Campeche. This doesn't indicate a system is expected, so be sure to stay up to date with the 7-Day forecast from the National Hurricane Center.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 144355-1748983440662.png"> Better chances for formation around Mid-June are expected in the Eastern Pacific, which <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/an-area-to-watch-in-the-pacific-already">already has one name crossed off the list</a>.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104826-1748537463299.png">A system in the Gulf or western Atlantic is not unusual in the month of June, which typically has warmer water early in the season compared to the MDR in the Atlantic (between the Caribbean and west Africa).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104849-1748537876634.png">The early season will more often see more tropical storms than hurricanes, but hurricanes can form and impact the United States, so it's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-prep-week-2025">always best to be prepared</a>. Andrea is the first name on the list in the Atlantic in 2025.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104834-1748537884478.png">Eastern Pacific Ocean</h2>We are monitoring a high chance for tropical development (70%) in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Conditions look favorable for a slow development by late this week. First Tropical System in the Atlantic Could Form Mid-June, Watching E. Pacific

Smoky skies will continue to cover portions of the Central and Eastern United States this week, as massive fires in Canada continue to spread. An upper-level trough in the Northeast and Great Lakes is guiding the smoke from north to south, which will eventually bring the smoke as far south as the Gulf Coast.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 111048-1748970658730.png">Smoke Overhead</h1>The forecast below shows where smoke will be visible overhead and doesn't necessarily indicate where air quality will be impacted. Think hazy sunrises and sunsets.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/06-03_smoek aloft-1748983348565.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Near Surface Smoke / Air Quality Impacts</h1>This model shows where smoke will be thick near the ground, indicating areas where air quality impacts are more likely. Minnesota is expecting more widespread impacts on the Air Quality front. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particle pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/06-03 suf-1748983354397.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Air quality alerts have been issued in the Upper-Midwest and portions of Ohio, and now into the northeast through Thursday, as thick smoke lingers in the region.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 144040-1748983363486.png">Be sure to monitor your air quality locally and limit time outdoors if it reaches levels that will affect your health. Wildfire Smoke from Canada Impacting the U.S.

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Upper-level energy and frontal boundaries interacting with dryline and upslope flow will trigger more storms over the coming days. Tuesday's risk slides a bit farther east thanks to the eastward progression of this cold front.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/nat-1748983564026.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather across the Midwest to the Southern Plains. The biggest concerns will be more damaging winds and large hail.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 144521-1748983571355.png">By Wednesday, the front slows down through the Great Lakes, bringing the severe threat into Detroit.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 144626-1748983591553.png">As this system moves through, some areas, especially Oklahoma and Missouri, can anticipate a LOT of rainfall. Multi-Day Severe Weather for the Plains

A stubborn mid-level low has been parked along the Gulf Coast over the past few days. That helped generate some heavy downpours in the afternoon on Monday. Those storms brought multiple inches of rainfall to areas in a short period of time.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 065822-1748955529428.png">That threat will continue today with more widespread storms, capable of dumping a few inches in a few hours. A Flood Watch covers parts of south Florida, including the Miami metro.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-03 065835-1748955525195.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Strong storms continue through the beginning of the work week. At beaches, never remain in the water during a storm, as lightning can strike well beyond where rain is falling. Lifeguards may post warnings or clear the beach if storms approach, heed all instructions promptly. Heavy Rain Swamps Florida

Rain and storm chances are in the forecast for parts of the Desert SW with a cutoff low nearby and remnants of Alvin pushing northward! Heavy rain has already lead to isolated instances of flooding around Arizona, where some places have surpassed 2 inches of rain! So much rain fell in Phoenix to SHATTER the previous daily record. Of course, with so much rainfall, the flooding threat will need to be monitored.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-02 071039-1748869870834.png">This is sorely needed rainfall, though. Let's check out the drought monitor below and you will notice lots of Level 4 and 5 drought across southern California, New Mexico, and Arizona.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/1-1748719349791.png">Today and tomorrow's rain chances will be highest as the cutoff low will be pushed eastward into the Plains. Much Needed Moisture Coming For the Southwest

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Even through summer is approaching, the northern lights may still dazzle millions into Monday morning. A powerful solar flare erupted from sun late Friday night, with an Earth directed coronal mass ejection (CME) expected to arrive sometime Sunday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/ezgif-51637e8d7b470f-1748712327325.gif">Astronomers are in a wait and see mode for how strong the CME may be, but many are hopeful it will be strong enough to bring aurora borealis down to the mid-latitudes, including a large portion of the north United States late Sunday into Monday. The Space Weather Prediction Center is expected G3 conditions, with the potential for G4 conditions by the 2nd, or early Monday morning. Their latest forecast shows the potential to view the aurora down to I-80 in Iowa and Nebraska.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 112223-1748712236698.png">G4 conditions would mean that Aurora viewing would be possible even further south, especially for long-exposure photography. It is worth noting the timing and strength of a CME is difficult to forecast, but satellites away from the Earth will be able to confirm if and when a CME impact is expected with about 30 minutes of lead time for Earthlings. This means if you plan to try to view the aurora, stay up to date with the Space Weather Prediction Center's latest conditions.<h2>Cloud Forecast</h2>Even if the aurora may be visible overhead, it doesn't mean clouds won't ruin your fun. For the northern and mid-latitudes, there will be some cloud cover over the northern Rockies, Great Lakes, and northern New England.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-31 11-22-33-1748712624382.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

Cities like Dallas and Houston have the potential to see a few strong to severe storms overnight. Damaging winds and hail will be the primary concern.
